Good idea: Go on the Tatoo ride, get home by 2:30 AM, snuggle up in your sheets, and have a great weekend.

Bad idea:

Ride your bike to VENTURA!!

Last August, we did a ride to four county seats, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and LA. The one county seat we missed out of our consolidated five-county metropolitan statistical region was Ventura, so we're taking a ride out there to check it out.

Meet at Union Station at 11:59 PM
You can see that this ride really takes place on Saturday, but let's consider it a late Friday night for calendar purposes

We'll take back streets to Santa Monica, then PCH to Oxnard, then some coastal roads to Ventura.

Then we'll take a $20 Amtrak back to LA Union Station.

BAD BAD BAD!
BAD IDEA RIDE!
BAD!

Things to consider:

>This ride includes a return on a Amtrak train: Bring $20 for your ticket--this price may go up. Also, if this ride has more than 10 people on it, expect bike on train stress or prepare to. take a later train--which means a delay of approximately two hours. Prepare to enjoy your morning in Ventura if this happens. Sleep in a park! They love that.

>We won't try to drop anyone, but this is specifically NOT a "no riders left behind" ride. On the Last Bad Idea ride, we did drop someone (completely unintentional). It was a bad idea for the ride leader not to collect mobile phone numbers before we started, but then again, that's the Bad Idea ride for you. Don't even remember the dude's name. Nice guy. he's probably enslaved or selling chiclets somewhere or dead. You know how they roll in the Claremont Colleges. Bring a bike in good working order, spare tubes & pump, bus fare (slim pickins at 4 am), & anything else you'd want on the fringes of a metropolis in the middle of the night. Don't come out if you're not willing to be on your own.
SPECIAL NOTE: No busses or VERY INFREQUENT BUSSES travel on a 20 mile portion of PCH between Malibu and Oxnard. If a catastrophic bike breakdown happens here, you will need to walk a lot, or you will need to hitchhike. There is no 'big city safety net' for part of this ride--it will go through a somewhat rural area.

>Other good things to bring: Lights & spare batteries. Water. Probably anti-inflammatories, if you flame out. A layer or two. Money for snacks. ID. Maps wouldn't hurt. A bit more water. A camera. A friend who'll hang out with you if you get stranded. Common sense, self-sufficiency, & responsibility for your own actions.

>Bring a copy of my cell phone number. It'll be the coordination number for the ride. If you can, it's really a good idea to bring a regional map with the route drawn in--at least the basics of the route. I'll provide direction sheets, but they won't show surrounding streets and escape routes.

>Bathroom opportunities will be few and far between.
The first Amtrak returning from Ventura to LA Union Station is at 7:20 AM-- we may miss this train, the next ones are at 9:45, then 2:41 PM. The train takes two hours to get to LA Union Station... Regardless of what train we make, the sun will be high in the sky by the time you get back to LA. This is a 73 mile ride.

>There are real dangers to this ride. Come along at your own risk.
Date:	Friday, October 24, 2008 to Saturday morning
